Tips for Preparing your Vehicle for Winter Weather

For those of us who live in climates where winter really does mean a wet and cold winter, the time has come to make sure your vehicle will survive the harsh weather conditions. Not doing so can put you, your passengers and other road users at risk of a collision, so every responsible automobile owner needs to take the proper steps at this time of year.

From ice and snow, to the wear and tear that can be caused by salt and gravel put down on the roads to combat icy conditions, winter can be a real strain on cars and other vehicles. Now is the best time to start checking that you have everything you need before getting caught in the middle of an early snow storm.

Winter driving

Here’s our best tips to prepare your vehicle for winter driving:

Get your car properly checked out

If you live somewhere that always gets a lot of snow and ice over winter, you really need your car or truck to be properly looked over by a mechanic to make sure there are no problems hiding away that could surface when you’re in a position that might be more difficult to get it fixed later. It might seem like an unnecessary expense but fixing things after the fact could cost you a lot more, and not just financially.

Make sure your lights work

During the summer months, you rarely need your headlights, so it’s easy not to notice when one of your bulbs goes out. However, as winter draws in, the evenings start getting longer and you find yourself using them more frequently. This is when you need to make sure that all of them are working properly and that you have replacement bulbs ready and available. If appropriate for your type of vehicle, this applies to warning lights as well.

Make sure your windshield is clear

Between the ice, snow, slush, salt, and gravel, winter throws a lot at your windshield, and if you can’t clear it effectively, that can make driving very dangerous for you and everyone else around you. If your wipers aren’t working properly, replace them. When it comes to the frigid cold and poor visibility, you’ll be grateful you did. You also need to make sure you have the right brushes and scrapers for removing snow and ice when your vehicle gets covered. You may even have some stored away from last winter. A tarp or cover might also be useful to place over your car in the worst conditions if you’re vehicle won’t be used for a while.

Make sure your vehicle can drive safely

On your driveway you can battle the conditions using snow blowers or salt spreaders but out on the roads, especially in rural areas, you are likely to be driving on slippery and dangerous surfaces. You need to make sure you have tire chains ready to be put on if you need them, which means keeping them in the trunk of your car just in case.
