From ice and snow to the wear and tear that can be caused by salt and gravel, winter can be a real strain on your vehicle.  Thus, the time has come to make sure your vehicle will survive the harshest weather conditions of the year. Neglecting your vehicle can place your passengers and other drivers in harm’s way.

Here are a few tips to prepare your vehicle for winter driving:

GET YOUR CAR SERVICED

You really need a mechanic to inspect your car or truck to make sure there are no underlying problems that might be more difficult to fix later.  For example, your car’s oil filter should be changed if it is dirty or clogged.  Also, use motor oil that will perform well in cold weather.  Typically, 5W30 oil is perfect for winter use, but synthetic oil with a 0W rating performs in even colder temperatures.

CLEAR YOUR WINDSHIELD

Winter brings ice, snow, slush, salt, and gravel which all gets thrown towards your windshield, and if you can’t clear it effectively, you will endanger yourself and everyone else around you.  Therefore, if your wipers aren’t working properly or haven’t been replaced in a while, be sure to get new ones. Deelat offers a wide variety of wiper blades for various car models to help you prepare!

You also need to make sure you have brushes and scrapers for removing snow and ice when your vehicle gets covered.  For bigger storms, you should have a small snow shovel in your trunk as well. A tarp or cover might also be useful to place over your car in the worst conditions if you’re vehicle won’t be used for a while.

WHERE THE RUBBER MEETS THE ROAD

Your car tires are the most important aspect of vehicle safety in winter conditions.  In general, you should check the tires’ tread wear, rotate your tires every other oil change, and don’t mix radial tires with any other tire types.  Also, remember that in cold weather your tires can lose pressure, which is a hazard.  Finally, be sure you have a few things in your trunk for the season:  tire chains for travelling on icy, slushy roads; and, in case of a blow out, a reliable hydraulic bottle jack and a spare tire.

Here’s our best tips to prepare your vehicle for winter driving:

Get your car properly checked out

If you live somewhere that always gets a lot of snow and ice over winter, you really need your car or truck to be properly looked over by a mechanic to make sure there are no problems hiding away that could surface when you’re in a position that might be more difficult to get it fixed later. It might seem like an unnecessary expense but fixing things after the fact could cost you a lot more, and not just financially.

Make sure your lights work

During the summer months, you rarely need your headlights, so it’s easy not to notice when one of your bulbs goes out. However, as winter draws in, the evenings start getting longer and you find yourself using them more frequently. This is when you need to make sure that all of them are working properly and that you have replacement bulbs ready and available. If appropriate for your type of vehicle, this applies to warning lights as well.

Make sure your windshield is clear

Between the ice, snow, slush, salt, and gravel, winter throws a lot at your windshield, and if you can’t clear it effectively, that can make driving very dangerous for you and everyone else around you. If your wipers aren’t working properly, replace them. When it comes to the frigid cold and poor visibility, you’ll be grateful you did. You also need to make sure you have the right brushes and scrapers for removing snow and ice when your vehicle gets covered. You may even have some stored away from last winter. A tarp or cover might also be useful to place over your car in the worst conditions if you’re vehicle won’t be used for a while.

Make sure your vehicle can drive safely

On your driveway you can battle the conditions using snow blowers or salt spreaders but out on the roads, especially in rural areas, you are likely to be driving on slippery and dangerous surfaces. You need to make sure you have tire chains ready to be put on if you need them, which means keeping them in the trunk of your car just in case.

Tips to Prepare Your Vehicle for Cooler Weather

Autumn is here. Leaves are falling from the trees and cooler air is beginning to settle in. Before the snow falls and inclement weather hits, it’s important to prepare your vehicle for the change of seasons. Below are a few tips to help protect and prepare your vehicle for the upcoming winter months.

Ian Britton

Windshield Wiper Blades and Fluid – Replace windshield wipers with new ones that will be able to withstand ice and snow build up. Be sure to change your windshield wiper fluid to winter suitable fluid as well. Regular windshield fluid tends to freeze in the colder weather.

Tires – If you live in a climate where there is heavy snowfall, you may want to replace your current tires with snow tires for added safety. If you find that it’s not necessary or you cannot financially afford new tires, you’ll still need to have them checked for alignment, tread depth and air pressure.

Oil – Get your oil changed before the onset of winter. This will also protect your engine and keep it running smoothly.

Antifreeze – Be sure you have enough coolant in your engine to last the winter. A lack of coolant can result in overheating.

Brakes – Have your brakes inspected professionally before winter. With ice, snow and often heavy rainfall, you’ll want to make sure your brakes will not fail.

break inspection

Winter Supplies – Build a winter emergency kit to keep in the trunk of your vehicle for longer trips. This will ensure that you are ready for hazardous winter conditions. Your kit should include a blanket, shovel, hand broom, flashlight, rope, cat litter for weight to help prevent sliding, emergency flares, jumper cables, cell phone charger and a few bottles of drinking water.

Gas – Throughout the winter season, be sure to keep your gas tank above half full as well. In colder temperatures, a nearly empty gas tank can adversely affect your engine’s power.
