TIPS TO PREPARE YOUR VEHICLE FOR WINTER DRIVING

From ice and snow to the wear and tear that can be caused by salt and gravel, winter can be a real strain on your vehicle.  Thus, the time has come to make sure your vehicle will survive the harshest weather conditions of the year. Neglecting your vehicle can place your passengers and other drivers in harm’s way.

Here are a few tips to prepare your vehicle for winter driving:

GET YOUR CAR SERVICED

You really need a mechanic to inspect your car or truck to make sure there are no underlying problems that might be more difficult to fix later.  For example, your car’s oil filter should be changed if it is dirty or clogged.  Also, use motor oil that will perform well in cold weather.  Typically, 5W30 oil is perfect for winter use, but synthetic oil with a 0W rating performs in even colder temperatures.

CLEAR YOUR WINDSHIELD

Winter brings ice, snow, slush, salt, and gravel which all gets thrown towards your windshield, and if you can’t clear it effectively, you will endanger yourself and everyone else around you.  Therefore, if your wipers aren’t working properly or haven’t been replaced in a while, be sure to get new ones. Deelat offers a wide variety of wiper blades for various car models to help you prepare!

You also need to make sure you have brushes and scrapers for removing snow and ice when your vehicle gets covered.  For bigger storms, you should have a small snow shovel in your trunk as well. A tarp or cover might also be useful to place over your car in the worst conditions if you’re vehicle won’t be used for a while.

WHERE THE RUBBER MEETS THE ROAD

Your car tires are the most important aspect of vehicle safety in winter conditions.  In general, you should check the tires’ tread wear, rotate your tires every other oil change, and don’t mix radial tires with any other tire types.  Also, remember that in cold weather your tires can lose pressure, which is a hazard.  Finally, be sure you have a few things in your trunk for the season:  tire chains for travelling on icy, slushy roads; and, in case of a blow out, a reliable hydraulic bottle jack and a spare tire.

Tips for Preparing your Vehicle for Winter Weather

For those of us who live in climates where winter really does mean a wet and cold winter, the time has come to make sure your vehicle will survive the harsh weather conditions. Not doing so can put you, your passengers and other road users at risk of a collision, so every responsible automobile owner needs to take the proper steps at this time of year.

From ice and snow, to the wear and tear that can be caused by salt and gravel put down on the roads to combat icy conditions, winter can be a real strain on cars and other vehicles. Now is the best time to start checking that you have everything you need before getting caught in the middle of an early snow storm.

Winter driving

Here’s our best tips to prepare your vehicle for winter driving:

Get your car properly checked out

If you live somewhere that always gets a lot of snow and ice over winter, you really need your car or truck to be properly looked over by a mechanic to make sure there are no problems hiding away that could surface when you’re in a position that might be more difficult to get it fixed later. It might seem like an unnecessary expense but fixing things after the fact could cost you a lot more, and not just financially.

Make sure your lights work

During the summer months, you rarely need your headlights, so it’s easy not to notice when one of your bulbs goes out. However, as winter draws in, the evenings start getting longer and you find yourself using them more frequently. This is when you need to make sure that all of them are working properly and that you have replacement bulbs ready and available. If appropriate for your type of vehicle, this applies to warning lights as well.

Make sure your windshield is clear

Between the ice, snow, slush, salt, and gravel, winter throws a lot at your windshield, and if you can’t clear it effectively, that can make driving very dangerous for you and everyone else around you. If your wipers aren’t working properly, replace them. When it comes to the frigid cold and poor visibility, you’ll be grateful you did. You also need to make sure you have the right brushes and scrapers for removing snow and ice when your vehicle gets covered. You may even have some stored away from last winter. A tarp or cover might also be useful to place over your car in the worst conditions if you’re vehicle won’t be used for a while.

Make sure your vehicle can drive safely

On your driveway you can battle the conditions using snow blowers or salt spreaders but out on the roads, especially in rural areas, you are likely to be driving on slippery and dangerous surfaces. You need to make sure you have tire chains ready to be put on if you need them, which means keeping them in the trunk of your car just in case.

Tips to Prepare for a Summer Road Trip

If you have children, you may find it expensive and even difficult to use air travel. So, to get to your chosen destination, driving may be the best suitable option. Road trips can also provide an opportunity to enjoy and spend some time with family and friends. Before you hit the road however, there are some steps that you should take to ensure you are prepared.

Road-trip

  • Plan and pack activities for the kids. Some ideas include DVD’s (if you have a player), reading or coloring books, magazines, handheld games or puzzles such as word search.
  • Don’t forget to pack snacks including bottled water. This will keep you from having to make so many stops.
  • Plan your route and print it out in advance as a backup. Even though you may have GPS, remember in some areas you may have no or poor connections.
  • If you have time, plan your trip around sightseeing. For example, plan your stops for gas or lunch in cities where you can stop and see landmarks or other attractions.
  • Be sure to pack an emergency first aid kit. This kit should include a pain killer, band aids, an antiseptic and stomach medication such as Pepto Bismol.
  • Don’t forget cords and chargers for electronics.
  • Are pills and other medications packed? Double check before leaving.
  • Finally, make sure you have copies of documents that you might need. This includes passports (if needed) and health/contact information in case of emergency.

Changing-Tire

More importantly however, you’ll want to make sure the car is in tip-top shape for your trip. Complete the below checklist and you’ll be set:

  • Get your oil changed if you haven’t done that in a while.
  • Top off all other fluids in the car as well. This includes brake fluid, transmission fluid and coolant. Don’t forget windshield washer fluid too as you never know what type of weather you might run in to.
  • Inspect your tires for damage. Be sure to also inflate your tires to the proper PSI before leaving. Bring along a hydraulic service jack, in case you should encounter any tire issues.
  • Ensure that all of your vehicle lights are working. Check brake lights, turn signals and interior lighting for late night driving.
  • Store items in your trunk in case of emergency. This should include a spare tire, flashlight and tools, along with jumper cables.
