If you have an elaborate irrigation system for a vegetable garden, you may want to install a motorized ball valve or several of them for a variety of reasons.  The benefits include better convenience, faster control and safer operation compared to more basic set-ups.  For example, a motorized ball valve can be used as an emergency shut-off, if it is installed at the point where the water source connects to the irrigation system.  For many users, this is the place where the garden hose connects to the PVC pipe that feeds into the drip lines.

Furthermore, a motorized ball valve is useful as a control mechanism to shut off sections of the garden that may not need water or to prioritize which plants get watered during a drought.  What’s more, a motorized ball valve can help quickly relieve pressure in the irrigation system; excess pressure can cause irrigation pipes to burst.

For this example, Deelat’s motorized electric ball valves can be installed to control the irrigation system between a garden hose (connected to the house’s spigot) and the irrigation system.  Among the models suited for this purpose are motorized electric ball valves that consist of a 24V AC on/off actuator and a 2-way brass or stainless steel valve.

First you will have to select a motorized electric ball valve that matches the size of the PVC pipe you are using for your irrigation system.  There are a wide variety of couplers and adapters to connect brass or stainless steel to PVC, and you may also need an adapter to connect your garden hose to the valve if there is a size difference.

The actuator has 3 wires:

  1. Blue Wire = Negative/Neutral

The blue wire is continuously connected to the 24V transformer’s neutral connection.

  1. Brown Wire = Positive

The brown wire is continuously connected to the 24V transformer’s line connection.

  1. Black Wire = Controlling wire which is also Positive

The black wire connects to the 24V transformer’s line connection through a switched connection.

The valve opens when the switched connection is completed between the black wire and the 24V transformer’s line connection.  When this switched connection in broken, the valve closes.

Follow these steps to complete the set-up:

  1. Install the actuator on the valve.
  2. Attach the actuator’s blue wire directly to the neutral connection on the transformer.
  3. Attach the actuator’s brown wire directly to the line connection on the transformer.
  4. Attach the black wire directly to the light switch (either connection is fine).
  5. An additional wire is needed to connect the other connection on the light switch to the line connection on the transformer.

If the connections are done properly, you can test the unit by plugging the 24V transformer into an outlet and flipping the light switch, which should close the valve.  Flip the switch to the opposite side and the valve should open again.
