Over the past few years, thieves and robbers have become more savvy in their burglary attempts. Consequently, everyday citizens need to become more cautious and aware in order to protect themselves and their belongings.
Other than hiring a professional service to secure the premises of your home or office, what else can you do to keep yourself from becoming a victim?
The most important tip is to make it difficult to steal from you. Most thieves will plan ahead by watching your daily routine and find out what opportunity they may have to enter the premises without being noticed. They will most often choose a home or office that provides the quickest and easiest access. To dissuade or avoid your home or office from being on their list, you can do the following:
1.) Equip your home or office with security lighting. Consider choosing lights with motion detectors to scare away intruders.
2.) Make doors and windows highly visible. Remove tall trees and shrubs that may provide burglars with a place to hide.
3) Lock all of your doors and windows even if you plan to be gone for only a short period of time.
4) Install deadbolts on all of your exterior doors. Deadbolts are almost impossible for intruders to open without the use of bulky equipment such as hacksaws.
5) Sliding or patio doors may make for easy access to your home or office. Secure these doors with an anti-lift device such as a metal bar or pipe placed in the bottom of the door slide to prohibit movement. Secondary locks are also an option.
6) Put anti-lift devices or alarms in place on all of your sliding windows as well.
7) If there have been a lot of break-ins in your neighborhood, you can also install metal doors for added protection.
8) Make friends with neighbors or neighboring offices. Be a good neighbor by watching their home or office while they are away and asking them to do the same for you.
9) Keep valuables and cash in a locked safe. Again, customers or contractors that may be nosing around will find it more difficult to break into a safe and thus will think twice about trying to steal from you. Make sure the safe is installed in the wall or a cabinet to keep them from simply snatching the safe and opening it later.
10) Don’t forget to have adequate lighting indoors as well. Indoor lights can also be a deterrence to burglars.
