Kitchen Renovation Project Tips

Kitchens need to serve the dual purpose of both food production and comfort, particularly in smaller homes where there may not be many other communal rooms.

If you happen to be thinking of renovating your kitchen, integrate these thoughtful tips to create a space that is functional and easy to work and live in.

Give Yourself Some Room

The kitchen is a high traffic area, so get the layout right.  Paths throughout a kitchen should be at least 36 inches wide.  Paths within the cooking zone should be 42 inches wide for a one-cook kitchen and 48 inches wide for a two-cook configuration.  Keep the stovetop out of busy areas so that people don’t bump into boiling pots.  Conversely, put the refrigerator in a place where both the cooks and the bystanders can reach for a cold one.

Another thing that needs the right layout is your sink.  Do you want a single or a double?  Make sure you set it at an appropriate height based on what is comfortable for you.

kitchen 6

Arrange the Range

With a shelf placed behind or beside the range, you can keep all of your cooking oils, utensils, and spices nearby and organized.  Place hooks on the side of the range hood to hang frequently used pots and pans.

kitchen 5

Clear a Space

Do you really want your microwave on the counter top, taking up space and requiring you to bend over to look inside?  Free up that space with a dedicated shelf for the microwave.  Consider the appliances you want on the counter top and give them plenty of room so that they may be used appropriately.  Now is the time to set up a proper place for that steam espresso machine, if that’s your thing.

Match Colors

Make it look like you put some thought into the details.  If red accent walls are popular, why not tie that in with your appliances?  You might be able to find a blender, a juicer, a toaster, a swift chopper and a meat grinder all in the same shade of red!

Get the Experts In!

Kitchens are too important to get wrong.  If you end up with a kitchen renovation disaster because you haven’t consulted any planners or designers or have attempted to do it all yourself without the right expertise or tools, you’ll get bored of take-out very quickly. So make sure you at least run your ideas past someone who knows what they’re talking about.

Tips for Hosting a Holiday Gathering

The holiday season is upon us and one thing we all know about Christmas is the large get-togethers with friends and family. There’s nothing better at this time of year than getting all of your loved ones together in a nice cozy setting for a big dinner that leaves everyone feeling stuffed and ready to fall asleep in front of a movie afterwards.

holiday 1

However, as fun and as special these occasions are, they don’t organize themselves, and hosting one can be a very stressful time, even before the more difficult family members arrive! Most of the stress is due to the pressure of cooking and serving such a large amount of food, particularly if you find out that you’re missing something crucial.

Here are some great tips to help prepare you for a holiday gathering so that you can stress less and enjoy this time of year!

Make sure you have enough chairs

Whether it’s Thanksgiving, Christmas or any other big family event, one thing you can guarantee is that someone will end up sitting on a chair that is clearly unsuitable for the dining table it’s found itself next to, simply because the hosts have run out of the right chairs. Don’t fall into this problem, make sure you have some stackable chairs in storage ready to get out on Turkey Day.

Be ready for all the food preparation

If you’re hosting this year, you’ve got a lot of work to do during the day, so be certain that you have everything you need to get the job done. Whether it’s aprons (or kids’ aprons if you’ll be having some little helpers), steamers to sort out the vegetables or cutting boards to chop them. Oven mitts are important too for getting hot food out of the oven. You don’t want to find out too late that you haven’t got them. Also don’t forget about cleaning gloves and towels for washing up.

Don’t forget the drinks and snacks

With a houseful of guests to entertain, you don’t want to run out if you want to be remembered as a great host. It’s not just a case of remembering to buy enough, you also need to store them and serve them. Your guests might not expect just one meal, they’ll want a few snacks throughout the day, like popcorn if you happen to watch a movie!

Get rid of the leftovers!

One final absolute guarantee for the holiday season is that you’ll make too much food. If you don’t want to end up still eating turkey by mid-January, you’ll need to make sure you’ve got some tupperware storage boxes that you can send with your guests to avoid having too much leftovers.

Tips to Prepare for an All Day Hike

When the weather is great (or even when it’s not so great), a hike into the countryside is a perfect way to find peace, relaxation and a taste of the natural world. It’s also excellent exercise, burning lots of calories while filling your lungs with fresh air.

hike2

And, the best part of all, it’s fun, but only if you’re well prepared for what you might need during your trip, otherwise it can turn into a nightmare. First time hikers can end up without the proper clothing, or even underestimate the appropriate amount of food and water to take with them.

Even experienced hikers can forget to prepare properly sometimes, but that doesn’t have to be you. Here are some useful tips to prepare for all day hike!

Select Your Hike Carefully

This is particularly essential if it is your first time, but for any level of hiker, you need to do your research before heading straight into the wild. You must know what your route is, how long it should take and where any potential risks are, otherwise you’re setting yourself up for the possibility of getting stranded and having more trouble rather than fun on your agenda.

It’s easier than ever to do this research now that the internet has given us sites that map popular routes with all kinds of guidance from experts to help you along. Just remember that the wilderness might not have great cell phone reception, so don’t rely on it to get you out of danger if you don’t have a physical map with you. Deelat also offers GPS watches that can pinpoint your location in the event of getting lost. The watches are waterproof and are powered using a rechargeable battery.

Check The Weather

You can rarely be 100% confident that the weather won’t change dramatically, particularly if your hike is taking you to a higher elevation into the clouds, but you can at least make sure beforehand that your hike isn’t going to be taking place in 100mph winds and torrential rain for the entire day. If that’s what the forecast says, make sure that you’re prepared and know how much time you plan to spend on your route.

Be Ready For An Emergency

Hiking done right shouldn’t be a dangerous activity, but things can go wrong for anyone at any time. So it’s not a sign of weakness or lack of confidence to take a first aid kit with you, it’s a necessity and you’d be irresponsible not to.

If anything does happen, you might need more than just a first aid kit to be rescued, but that kit could be the difference between an accident and a tragedy. At the very least it will help you clean up any scratches and scrapes that occur after scrambling or sliding over rocks.

Another useful thing to have with you is some high visibility clothing that you can wear if you happen to get stranded somewhere, to help rescuers find you when it starts going dark.

Take Food!

There won’t be an Arby’s halfway up the mountain or out in the desert, so if you are going on an all-day hike, you’ll need some food to eat, both at lunch time and throughout the day to help replenish any lost energy. Film-wrapped sandwiches are always a good choice. You can also fill tupperware storage boxes and insulated transport bags with whatever you need, in order to keep you going.

Kitchen Renovation Ideas and Tips

The kitchen is the heart of every home; it’s where the family comes together and the food is prepared and often eaten. It’s no wonder we spend so much money on making sure our kitchens are just right.

kitchen 1

They need to serve the dual purpose of both food production and comfort, particularly in smaller homes where there may not be many other communal rooms.

So if you happen to be thinking of renovating your kitchen, you need to make sure you’re going to get it done properly, otherwise the negative impact will definitely be felt over time. To help you along, here are some kitchen renovation ideas and tips!

Think About How You’ll Be Using It

There’s more to a kitchen than just how it looks, so if you’re going to start again from scratch, now is the time to think about how you currently use it and what you could improve.

Which items do you use most often? The microwave? The toaster? The mixer? Are they currently placed somewhere that’s convenient for you? Are items you use together actually stored together? If you’re getting more electricity sockets, are they in the correct place?

Get The Traffic Flow Right

The kitchen is a room that gets busier than almost any other, particularly if there’s a door to your back yard attached as well.

There’s always people walking through and it’s also the room where you’re most likely to be standing around doing things (involving boiling water and other such hazards), so you need to think about this when planning the layout.

Don’t set up your kitchen so that one person standing at the sink washing up can cause a traffic jam.

Treat Yourself

A kitchen renovation is an expensive process to go through, not to mention a hugely disruptive one, so you need to make sure you’ll come out the other side feeling like you’re really getting a major upgrade.

As well as making sure you’re improving the look and feel of your kitchen, why not add some luxuries? Have you always wanted a pizza oven? How about a rice cooker?

A word of caution, make sure you plan these into your counter space layout, so that you’re not cluttering everything in your shiny new kitchen. If that’s not possible why not add some new cookware so you can avoid getting your new kitchen grimy with your old pots and pans?

Look For Bargains Without Compromising Quality

With kitchens it’s always tempting to go for the shiniest, newest-looking cabinets and furniture, but you can bring in a touch of homeliness and save some money if you go for more of a vintage feel.

Check out local websites and stores that sell vintage furniture before you start planning and you could find yourself a bargain as well as a whole new identity for your kitchen that you hadn’t planned on initially.

Tips for Hosting a Backyard BBQ

It’s that time of year again. The sun is shining, the weather is sweet and summer time is about to burst into its full glory. There’s one thing we can all agree on when it comes to summer and that’s firing up the BBQ for an outdoor gathering! Or several. Everybody loves a barbeque on a hot and sunny day; a chance to cook some great food, grab a beer, put on some tunes and relax and celebrate with your friends, family and neighbors.

Outdoor Weekend Bbq Grill Party Or Picnic Concept

BBQ’s are a fairly simple way of entertaining; as long as you’ve got the weather and some good food and drink, you don’t need much else to make people happy, but holding a truly great backyard BBQ is still an art that not everybody is a master of. In that spirit, here are some of the best tips we know of to make your BBQ a hot one:

Tidy Up The Yard First!

This isn’t necessarily the most fun part of the day, but your guests will be spending most of their time in your backyard, so they’ll definitely notice if it’s in a state of total chaos and disarray. If you’re not the type to spend hours maintaining your garden, you can still spend a few hours on the day itself making sure it looks good for your guests. You’ll need the right tools of course, and it will definitely be worth it.

Don’t Forget The Lights

Even on a hot and sunny day, the sun has to set at some point and if you don’t want that to be the end of your BBQ, you’ll need to make sure you have some good outdoor lights and/or solar lights.

Make Sure You Have The Essentials

While standing (for the adults) and running around (for the kids) are normal parts of any good BBQ, you still need to make sure you have enough chairs for everyone, so investing in some stackable chairs that you can keep in storage is a must. Another thing you might not think about but will definitely need, is some trays for carrying around all the sauces, cutlery, napkins, etc.

Get The Drinks Right

This doesn’t just mean getting in enough beers and soft drinks to go around. You also need to make sure that you’ve got some way of keeping them cool out in the sun, so ice buckets will be very popular. And for when the sun goes down, you can add some fun to the party with flashing drink glasses?

Some Cooking Tips

And then, of course, you have the actual cooking part itself to take care of. It takes more than a novelty apron and chef’s hat to get this right, so here are some basics you need to know. You have to make sure you’ve got the best fuel for the job, depending on what kind of BBQ you have, and also know when the best time to start cooking is, which is usually just after the flames have died down, when the coals are at their hottest. It goes without saying that you need to keep an eye on the temperature to make sure everything is cooking properly, and that just leaves you with selecting the right food for you and your guests.
