The winter months can be troublesome for the roof, pipes, driveway, and walkway of your home or commercial property.  For example, on the roof of your home, snow and ice can collect around the eaves, creating ice dams that prevent water from properly draining.  This buildup of ice can damage your roof, gutters and siding.  Furthermore, snow and ice on your driveway is a hazard for pedestrians, it makes driving difficult, and removing it is time consuming.  To remedy these issues, Deelat Industrial offers a selection of high quality de-icing cables for roofs and heating cables for driveways.

de-icing 2

A de-icing cable heats up internally to raise the temperature of surrounding areas.  An inner conductor produces the heat, which is surrounded by layers of PVC insulation and coating to ensure safe operation.  The cable is capable of reaching temperatures as high as 140 degrees Fahrenheit and will work in temperatures as low as -40 degrees Fahrenheit.  One end of the cable plugs into an outlet, and the cable is flexible enough to be wrapped around piping and used on various types of roofs.

de-icing 1

Begin the installation by attaching clips that will hold your cable in place to your roof shingles in a zigzag pattern.  Place these clips around the perimeter of your house so that the peaks and the troughs of the zigzag are between 18 and 24 inches apart.  When you are ready to install the cable, start by making sure that your plug is close enough to reach an exterior outlet.  (Consider dropping the plug down a downspout if it is near an outlet.)  Place the cable through the clips in a zigzag pattern, making sure that the cable loops hang over the gutter.  This configuration will help direct the flow of water off of the roof and into the gutter.

de-icing 3

You should also place the cable horizontally along the bottom of the gutters; if you do not, the water runoff from the roof is likely to refreeze once it hits the gutter.  Be sure to loop some of the cable into the opening of each downspout to ensure that they remain free of ice.  If your roof has valley gutters or any other structure that could trap ice, lay cable through that space as well.

When you expect snow, plug in your cables and leave them on during snowfall and long afterwards.  They will in turn, melt all of the snow and ice at the bottom of your roof, but they will create channels for water to runoff as the snow and ice melt.  If the cables are laid properly, the water will not refreeze and create ice dams.

Driveway heating cables are securely installed prior to the pouring of concrete or asphalt, or positioning of pavers in a driveway, sidewalk, or road.  The cable is spliced to a power supply, which is connected to a control unit.  The cables provide radiant heat to the surrounding area; it is possible for the cables to heat up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit.  Moreover, Deelat driveway heating cables are made to function in temperatures as low as -40 degrees Fahrenheit.

de-icing 4

Similar to roof de-icing cables, driveway heating cables should also be placed in a zigzag pattern.  The cable can be bent to fit into tight spaces in order to maximize heat radiation. provides a variety of de-icing and driveway heating cables for home and commercial installation. You can choose from our broad selection of heating cables, based on length and type of material.

Whether you are looking to sell your home or refinance your mortgage, you will want to have your house appraised to determine its worth accurately.  A licensed professional will complete the appraisal by determining the value of your home in an open market; the more money your home is appraised for, the more money you will receive when you sell it or refinance it.

There’s a lot of work for you to do in order to ensure that you’re getting a fair valuation for your home.  Below are some useful tips to help you prepare for a home inspection before selling:

1.) Install safety equipment and be sure it is functioning properly. These include smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, and home security alarms.

2.) The interior of the house should be updated.  This includes counter tops, cabinetry, flooring and appliances.  The appearance of the home will affect the appraisal, so repaint the walls, hang new curtains, install shiny new fixtures like faucets and doorknobs, and remove damaged or worn out furniture.  Once it is updated, keep your house clean to make it more attractive to both appraisers and potential buyers.

3.) Houses with high curb appeal receive better appraisals, so tidy up your yard.  Mow your grass, trim your trees and shrubbery, plant colorful flowers, and remove dead trees.  Keep the clutter out of the yard, including lawn furniture, bicycles, and toys. Use a power washer to clean your house, patio, driveway and walkway.

4.) Plumbing can be a major stumbling block during home inspections.  If you know there might be some problems, fix them as soon as possible, or it will cost you.  If necessary, use an infrared thermometer to detect temperature problems with leaky pipes.

5.) Things that need to be corrected or are out of date, as a general rule, make $500 deductions in the total home value.  Therefore, any problem that will cost you less than $500 should be repaired immediately. Get the right tools for a variety of DIY jobs: screwdrivers, hammers, pliers, socket sets, saws and blades, and vises.

Basement Renovation Ideas and Tips

When the square footage of a house begins to feel inadequate, many homeowners take on a basement renovation project as a way to expand their living space.  A basement space can be transformed from a dusty, cluttered wasteland into office space, a play area for children, an in-law suite for visiting relatives, or just a nice bonus room for the family.

However, it’s a costly and complicated procedure that requires the right know-how and the proper tools.  Below are some of our top tips for basement development or renovation:

The first important step is to do proper measurements and checks to make sure you have the correct dimensions and that you are aware of any potential problems.  For example, you may need an infrared thermometer to detect temperature troubles with leaky pipes, etc.  You may also require a carbon monoxide meter, an insulation tester, or a humidity meter to truly assess the situation.

If you are intending to use the basement for family members as living space, you’ll need a full or half bath to accommodate them.  Thus, plan to run the new PVC pipe behind a new wall before it is nailed into place.  If you are setting up a bonus room for your family to enjoy, forget plumbing and focus on a thick carpet and heat-resistant padding.  If your basement will become a playroom for the kids, carpet tiles or playground tiles might be all you need.

You will most likely end up using almost every kind of tool imaginable, so stock up on the following to be fully prepared:  screwdrivers, hammers, pliers, socket sets, saws and blades, and vises.  Depending on how elaborate your renovation is, you may also require a demolition hammer to break up concrete or a drill and rotary hammer to drill through it.

One of the main issues you can have with a basement conversion is that it can seem cooler than the rest of your house, so you need to make sure you have the right flooring or carpeting to help it feel more welcoming.  However, if you install an in-floor heating system to keep the basement warm, skip the thick carpeting and heat-resistant padding as they will impair the efficiency of the in-floor heating system.  Furthermore, you will most certainly need to insulate your basement walls; foam panel insulation is the easiest type to install for this application.

Of course, you don’t need to go to National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation lengths to make your home look good.

Get ready to battle the snow

It’s not just about making your home look pretty of course, there is also the winter weather to think about. Tips to Prepare your Home for Fall Weather

Fall has arrived and that means the weather is getting cooler (unless you happen to live in one of those always-sunny states). The leaves will be falling and so will the rain as winter edges closer and closer. That means it’s time to prepare your home for some rough conditions.

fall 2

During the summer months, you may have taken the weather for granted, spending your afternoons and evening outdoors, enjoying your garden, but those days are gone until next year. There’s lots to enjoy about the new Fall season, but also the potential for issues to arise that can affect your property and your safety.

fall 1

Below are some handy tips to help you avoid this and prepare your home for the new Fall season.

Get your garden ready

You’ll be spending less time in your garden, but you can’t afford to ignore it over the Fall and Winter otherwise you’ll have a huge job on your hands when Spring finally comes around. Get your garden ready with the right tools whether for pruning flowers or pressure washing patio areas prior to storage to keep them from getting grimy and slippery.

Storage and protection

You also need to ensure that your outdoor furniture is protected from the elements with tarps to avoid cold moisture which can freeze and cause damage. You don’t want to find out that they’ve been ruined when the time comes to use them again. You may want to look into some new storage options to make sure you have somewhere to keep your outdoor items that are safe and secure.

Invest in lighting

As the nights will become darker earlier in the coming months, you may need to think about adding more illumination to your yard or outdoor pathway to give you better access after the sun goes down, and also boost your overall security. In Fall, outdoor lighting becomes very important.

Prepare for icy weather

As Fall moves towards winter, icy mornings will become more common and you need to ensure that the weather doesn’t affect your ability to go about your daily business. Deicing cables and driveway heating cables will help you do that by eliminating unwanted ice. They’re easy to install and are certainly worth looking into!

Keep your home safe

The colder weather and early sunsets will make it more likely that you will be lighting your home with candles and warming it with  a fireplace. This can create a lovely, cozy atmosphere, but it can also represent an increased risk to your home, so you need to make sure you are protected with top quality smoke detectors to warn you of any potential hazards.
